We Are Honored by Our Pure Sajda

(Du`a of Khutbah)

O Muslims, Believers! Allah (swt) presented and honored us to be the best ummah sent to humanity:

كُنتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللّهِ

Kuntum khayra ummatin ukhrijat li’n-naas taamuroona bi’l-ma`roofi wa tanhawna `ani’l-munkari wa tu’minoona billaah.

You are the best of people evolved for Mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. (Surat Aali-`Imraan, 3:110)

And the Prophet (s) predicted that there will come a time when this ummah that Allah (swt) created to call for good and forbid bad is going to fall into the traps of Shaytan. That is why the Prophet (s) said:

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : « يأتي على الناس زمان القابض على دينه كالقابض على الجمررواه الترمذي .

Qaala rasoolullah yaatee `ala an-naasi zamaan al-qaabidu `ala deenihi ka’l-qaabidu `alaa al-jamr.

The one holding his religion firmly in his hand is like someone holding a burning coal.
This is exactly what we are seeing today, that there are many Muslims around the world who are not complying with what Allah (swt) has ordered us to do. We may live up to 100 to 120 years, but what is going to happen after that? At the end you are going to die, not taking anything with you. That is why the Prophet (s) said that the one holding his religion, especially in these times, is like someone holding fire in his hands. As much as you hold onto the religion you will get a better dunya, or even greater, a better akhirah with a better situation.

Today is going to vanish; one day you are going to extinguish and be completely gone. You will become soil, nothing will be left from you except your good `amal.  If you say to some people, “Go to Hajj,” they might tell you, “But we are young, we want to live our lives. We’ll go when we are 70 or 80.” But don’t they realize they might die early? For those who listen to guidance, the best time to go is between the ages 20 and 40, because that’s when you have strength. After that you get weaker and weaker and your health begins to decline. So, better to enjoy akhirah! Those who enjoyed dunya but were brought back to religion by Allah (swt) are lucky, because they were brought before death. If they fall back into doing drugs or drinking, or whatever Allah (swt) has prohibited, they are going to be in danger.

Someone might say, “Well, others are doing it and they are Muslim too; they pray and do this and that, so why can’t I?” Yes, but their prayers are not pure! Now they are allowing the use of marijuana and other drugs in the West and in Europe, but back in our countries we never heard of these before, until we came here. In Holland it is even free; you can plant it at home, and Muslims are doing it!

They say, “There is benefit in it because it makes us sleep, like Valium that helps you to relax.” Valium is a medicine that you take as needed, for pain or to relax, but the other one is a plant. The Prophet (s) said, kulli mudurrin yuqtal, “Everything which harms should be cut down.” Don’t go back to the way of Shaytan! It might be difficult at the beginning, but it will get easier by time, and then your prayer will go directly to Allah (swt).

One time the Prophet (s) and his Companions (r) were praying taraweeh around the Ka`bah while Jibreel (a) was descending with the Revelation, until he reached a place, and said, “Yaa Rasoolullah! We [angels] cannot approach closer than this.” The Prophet (s) asked, “Why?” Jibreel (a) said, “Because some of your Companions have eaten garlic and onion, and angels cannot approach that smell.” This is despite Allah’s (swt) mentioning garlic and onions in the Holy Qur'an and despite being a cure to many diseases in Prophetic Medicine. So the Prophet (s) asked those Sahaabah (r) to leave, and said, “The rewards will still come to you, as I will be praying on your behalf.” However, they couldn’t bring themselves to leave because of their utmost love to him, so the Prophet (s) asked Sayyidina `Umar (r) to smell everyone’s breath and assist those with garlic or onion breath to leave, and they immediately left, after which the Revelation came down.

Now the smell of those who are drinking, smoking or taking drugs is worse! They are putting impurities in their nose and their system, which is forbidden based on the fiqh principle, kulli mudurrin yuqtal, “every harmful thing is eliminated” and Allah (swt) said:

وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَآئِثَ

wa yuharrimu `alayhimu ‘l-khabaa’ith
and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); (al-`Araf 7:157)

That is forbidden! You don’t want to come to prayer moving like a drunk one after using marijuana, so be careful, especially the youth! I am hearing a lot from people that their children are doing drugs. I asked them, “Did your parents do drugs?” and they said, “Yes.” Many are falling into this problem, parents and children. Therefore, when Allah (swt) guides you be happy!

إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَن يَشَاء وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ

Laa tahdee man ahbabta inn'Allaha yahdee man yashaa'u wa huwa a`lamu bi 'l-muhtadeena.
Surely you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He pleases, and He knows best the followers of the right way. (Surat al-Qasas, 28:56)

Be happy that Allah (swt) guided you to the Right Way. As we said, the one holding his religion is like holding a burning coal in his hand. Sometimes I ask, why did we get this place in a farm area where there is nothing, why not in the city? Because if in the city we might do as they are doing and in a rural area you don’t see anything but trees; no one will change you to impurity and so you stay pure. That means those who live in cities must be careful! Don’t look at others and say, “They are doing it so I can do the same.” Yes you can, but you are falling into impurities such that when you make sajda, it might not be accepted!

When Allah (swt) ordered angels to make sajda the first one to make it was Sayyidina Israfil (a) who, for that reason, is called “Abdur-Rahman” on earth. The name “Abdur-Rahman” gives a person long life, a long age, because Sayyidina Israfil (a) will be the last one to blow in the Trumpet when everyone will die in the Last Day. Also, as mentioned by Imam al-Qurtubi in at-Tadhkirat, Israfil (a) has the Qur’an written between his two eyes for rushing to do sajda on that order of Allah (swt). That is for one sajda of one angel that Allah (swt) created; what then of human beings, whom Allah (swt) honored more than angels and jinn

وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ

Wa laqad karamnaa Bani Adam.
We have honored the Children of Adam. (Surat al-'Israa, 17:70)

When Allah (swt) ordered angels to make sajda to Adam, all did except Iblees. That was for one sajda of respect, not worship, as worship is only for Allah (swt). For one sajda of respect to the Light of Muhammad (s) on Sayyidina Adam’s forehead, Allah (swt) wrote the entire Holy Qur’an between the eyes of Sayyidina Israfil (a)! What then of the one who makes sajda of worship to Allah (swt)? Imaan, Ma`rifah, Gnosticism, knowledge and realities will be written in his heart, and Shaytan will say, “Woe to me! When Allah ordered me to make sajda I didn't do it, but human beings were ordered and they did. I have been cursed and they have been honored!”

Therefore, make sajda and be honored. Don’t miss your prayers! Make sajda in your prayers as well as outside, voluntarily. When you remember Allah (swt) immediately make sajda khafiyyatan, a hidden sajda that no one but Allah knows about; do it secretly and He (swt) will reward you secretly with unknown rewards! When you make sajda and stay away from alcohol and drugs your sajda will be pure, and even if you fell into that in the past, now you stopped so your sajda is pure; you killed that najasa, impurity, and Allah (swt) will forgive. We say, “astaghfirullah, may Allah forgive us,” and begin a new life of purity.

Don’t get angry, because when you get angry you smoke and when you smoke you get addicted or turn to drugs and cannot leave it. So be careful, especially young ones. That is why the Prophet (s) said that the one holding his religion is like holding fire in his hand.

Imam Nawawi (r) said that Allah (swt) gave Iblees longer life in order to commit more sins so he can be punished more; he will be alive until Israfil (a) blows in the Trumpet and Allah (swt) will honor human beings when they go into sajda.

How does Allah honor human beings? The example he gave was when the Children of Adam (a) put their heads into sajda, and Sayyidina Adam (a) made sajda for forty years, crying on behalf of all his descendants for disobeying Allah (swt), then Allah honored him. That is why Allah (swt) said, “We have honored human beings,” but what did He honor us with? Are there other creatures living on earth besides human beings? There are animals, but what is the difference between us and animals? They eat and we eat; they have children and we have children. They don’t commit sins, we do, and in spite of that, Allah (swt) honored us more than animals because we make sajda! He honored us by giving food that He raised for us to sit and eat. We are not like animals bowing to earth in order to eat; we are honored to be given food directly to our mouths. Animals are not honored in that situation, as they have to make sajda in order to eat, from ants to worms, from camels to dinosaurs.

When Judgment Day comes people will be resurrected from their graves and angels will come to mu’mineen after seeing them emerge from their graves, cleaning their faces from the soil of that grave. When they begin to clean away that soil the angels will tell them, “Don’t take that from your foreheads, leave it as it is the place of sajda.”

That is the sign of their sajda on their faces, and Allah (swt) will keep it when they emerge from their graves; it will show on the forehead of Muslims and mu’mineen. Allah (swt) will say, “I will keep the mark on their foreheads from the traces of their prostrations in Paradise as a sign that they are My sincere servants.” So anyone who makes sajda is a sincere servant.

Don’t let Shaytan prevent you from making sajda, don’t listen to your ego, and make sajda as much as you can! Prohibit yourself from falling into impurities and what Allah does not like. Don’t be lazy; the Prophet (s) didn't like his Sahaabah (r) to be lazy. They were hard workers, some of whom were rich and some poor, but all of them worked. Similarly, Grandshaykh (q) urged all his followers from his Shaykh and Grandshaykh (q) all the the way up to study, learn and work. Don’t be ignorant! Don’t listen to those who tell you, “Don’t study.” No, study what you like; if you like to be a doctor, be a doctor as you will benefit your neighbors, your community, your family, your people. If you want to study law, study law; you will benefit and defend people who fall into the traps of those who judge them by not knowing the truth. You might take someone innocent out of prison and Allah (swt) will take you out of Hellfire for that.

Don’t be lazy! Many people are not doing anything but collecting money from the county, as it’s easy money. Why do people speak good about western countries? Because they help everyone, but if you are lazy that is your mistake. You have been given every possibility by your parents to study, but instead of studying you run after drugs and complain that your parents are not helping you when actually you put yourself into that problem, not your parents! Don’t put this on your parents and begin begging for money. It is not a nice way to complain against your parents by giving them bad words. When they were helping you, you didn’t study, you ran after bad things. So now who is to be blamed, you or them?

The first revelation to the Prophet (s) was:

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ * خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَق

Iqraa bismi Rabbika ’Lladhee khalaq, khalaqa 'l-insaana min `alaq.
Read! In the Name of your Lord Who created, Who created Man from a clot. (Surat al-`Alaq, 96:1-2)

Allah’s first order was “Iqraa, read!” He gave the Prophet (s) the first miracle that doctors have recently discovered, when He said, “Read, in the Name of Your Lord, Who created human beings from `alaq.” You know that worm that is hanging? In Arabic, they call it an “`alaq.” That is the secret that Allah (swt) allowed Prophet (s) to see: the infant hangs in the womb of the mother sucking blood like a leech. Read, learn and study!

Someone might study history, but what is the benefit? You study six years to come and tell people what happened to mummies 6000 years ago? I am not saying don’t study history, but do something useful for the community. Before you misunderstand what I am saying, I am not saying study something... but do something like business or.. which benefits the community.
